The Crochet: How a Rope-Making Technique Became Our Most Original Hair Tie
Sometimes the best ideas are the ones that make you wonder: "Wait, why hasn't anyone done this before?"
The round hair tie shape — however well it's made — concentrates pressure at a single point of contact. For those of us with delicate strands or a sensitive scalp, that concentrated hold can mean tension headaches and breakage at the tie line. Great materials make a big difference;. but we wanted to rethink the structure itself.
We knew there had to be a way to create a secure hold that felt more like a hug and less like a chokehold.
So we went back to our fourth-generation partners in Japan with a challenge: can we use your traditional rope-making expertise to create a tie that's genuinely good for hair?
A Design Born from Care for Your Hair
Here's the problem we kept coming back to: most hair ties make contact with your hair at one narrow line.
All the pressure — everything holding your ponytail in place — concentrates at that single point of contact. That's where the crease comes from. That's where the breakage at the tie line starts. That's why even the best round elastics have room to improve.
We started asking ourselves: what if we could increase the surface area dramatically? What if instead of one line of contact, we created regions of soft anchor points?
The Crochet Hair Tie is our answer.
Meet the Crochet: Loops That Cradle, Not Crush
The defining feature of the Crochet is its looped texture.
Soft organic cotton loops that cradle individual hair strands instead of crushing them into a single line.
More surface area means distributed pressure. Distributed pressure means reduced stress on individual strands. Reduced stress means no creasing, no breakage, no deformation of the hair shaft.
It's not just a different look. It's a fundamentally different approach to how a hair tie interacts with your hair.
And because those loops are long-staple organic cotton, this is the lowest-tension hair tie we've ever made. The organic cotton surface creates less friction against the hair cuticle than synthetic alternatives — hair glides rather than catches, cuticle scales stay flatter, and the cumulative damage that builds up from years of daily tying is significantly reduced.
But don't mistake that softness for weakness.
Expertly Crafted by Rope Makers
This design couldn't happen in just any factory.
We worked closely with our fourth-generation partners in Japan — the same artisans who've been making our Round hair ties for years. They come from a region famous for rope-making, and their families have been perfecting these techniques for generations.

But even with that expertise, the Crochet required months of sampling to get right.
The looped texture demanded precision. The spacing had to create optimal surface area without adding bulk. The tension had to be exactly right so the loops stayed soft but structured — working for fine hair, thick hair, and everything in between.
The result is something that genuinely doesn't exist anywhere else in the market.
It Works for Fine Hair and Thick Hair.
Fine hair gets gentle grip without excessive tension or multiple wraps that add bulk.
Thick hair gets distributed hold across dozens of contact points, so you don't need to pull tight enough to strain the follicle.
Curly hair gets smooth organic cotton that creates less friction against the cuticle — less frizz, less dullness, less of that roughed-up feeling when you take it down.
Straight hair gets zero creasing, even after hours of wear.
The Crochet works across the spectrum because the design addresses a fundamental issue that affects all hair types: concentrated pressure damages hair. Distributed hold protects it.
If you've been dealing with thinning at the temples or breakage at the tie line, understanding how traction alopecia develops is worth a read. The Crochet was designed to be part of the solution.
The Colors Make You Smile
Hot Jam is vibrant pink and red. Bold, playful, joyful. The kind of colour that adds energy to your day without overwhelming your outfit.
Purple Frost blends deep purple with cool blue undertones. Sophisticated, distinctive, striking. The colour you reach for when you want to feel intentional about the details.
Both were designed to bring a little delight to your daily routine. Because the things you use every day should make you feel good — not just function adequately.
No Plastics. Certified Clean. Nothing Hidden.
The entire crochet portion is 100% long-staple organic cotton.
Long-staple fibres are naturally smoother and more uniform than synthetic alternatives — they create less friction against the hair cuticle with every use. That means less static charge, less cuticle lifting, and less of the cumulative surface damage that causes frizz and dullness over time.
Every tie is also dyed using OEKO-TEX certified non-toxic dyes — which matters more than it sounds. Dyes used in conventional textile processing are engineered to bond permanently to fibres. Independent studies have found that between 1% and 42% of chemical residues remain in fabric after six washes. OEKO-TEX certification verifies that every dye meets independently tested safety thresholds.
A hair tie without that certification has no verified safety standard for the chemicals sitting against your hairline all day.
The Crochet does.
Inside the organic cotton crochet is a core of fair trade natural rubber. It provides elasticity that stretches and returns to its original shape repeatedly without losing resilience — holding firmly through workouts, long days, and multiple uses without going limp after a week.
Two plant-based ingredients. No plastics. No compromises.
