*Please keep in mind that these are plant-based materials which, by nature, are intended to biodegrade - so some wear and tear is to be expected. To make them last, limit exposure to elements such as sun, water and oil - as prolonged contact will speed up the breaking down of the materials.

We are very deliberate in our choice of fabrics and packaging and will only use those that adhere to our standards of leaving the world in better shape than before we started.
Our Organic Hair Ties and Organic Scrunchies are made of just 2 materials: organic cotton and natural tree rubber. Both materials are fair trade certified and grown/ harvested in India. Our organic cotton is also GOTS certified.
Our Organic Twist Headbands are made of 95% GOTS certified organic cotton and 5% spandex.
Packaging for all products is recycled-content FSC certified paper.
The short answer: You can feel the difference and it really is so much better for our world.
Conventional cotton covers 2.5% of the world’s cultivated land yet uses 25% of the world’s insecticides (considered the most harmful to human and animal life) and 10% of all agricultural chemicals. In short, it’s a crop that is extremely hard on our earth and the people and communities that grow it.
Organic cotton, by contrast, is grown without insecticides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers, meaning its health comes down to a balance of crop rotation, compost and cover crop strategies. When you consider that much of the developing world's cotton suppliers still pick cotton by hand – and the developing world produces the vast majority of cotton – then you can understand the implications of removing chemicals from the equation.
This is a topic we are very passionate about and encourage you to learn more about the subject - visit our Sustainability Page (LINK) for a deeper dive.
And just in case that hasn’t resonated, you really can feel the difference! It’s soft on your hair and soft on the planet!

Because the natural rubber takes longer to disappear, our Hair Ties cannot be disposed of in city compost bins (everything in their bins must compost within a year) so that leaves two options: home compost or landfill. Based on our estimates, the hair tie will fully break down in either case within a decade - with 70+% being gone within a matter of months in a composting environment (we've tested this). We always recommended repurposing your elastics for household use before disposal (they’re great at tidying unsightly wires).

Biodegradable materials are, by nature, capable of being broken down and returned to the soil - eventually. KOOSHOO products are created in a way that makes them durable, strong and high performance, but they’re still plant-based materials, which means they will wear down (just as intended) - but proper care can extend their life. To maximize longevity, avoid storing them in direct sunlight, stretching them while wet, or letting oils and hair products linger on them.
Wash your KOOSHOO hair accessories with like colors in cold water and lay flat or line dry. Good as new.
All products are proudly designed in Canada and Norfolk Island - wherever we are based at the time!
Our products are made at a Fairtrade certified social good factory in southern India where profits are used to fund important health-focused causes. Read more about this facility and why transparency matters here.
There are two options for the stretch you find in elastic products: synthetic rubber or natural rubber.
Synthetic rubber is made of petrochemicals and its main advantage over natural rubber is how long it lasts. We’re talking hundreds of years before they break down to micro-plastics - another problem altogether.
Natural rubber is tapped from a tree, much like maple syrup. Rubber trees can yield rubber for 20 years. Sadly, not all natural rubber is harvested the same way. The rubber industry is responsible for much deforestation across South East Asia.
We're proud to purchase our rubber from a fair trade rubber plantation at the far southern tip of India. Their rubber trees are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified to ensure no deforestation occurs. The plantation is certified by the Fair Rubber Association.

We have two types of certifications - those that are attributed to us directly and those that are attributed to our suppliers. In order for a certification to be attributed to our brand (KOOSHOO) we need to pay a licensing fee. The certification fees are high (up to $10,000 a year) - so, as a small business, we have decided in some cases to use suppliers who already hold these important certifications. This means that despite not all our certifications being listed under KOOSHOO, our products are made from ingredients that do in fact hold the following certifications:
- Fairtrade Certified Organic Cotton (we are a licensee)
- Fair Rubber Association certified Fair Rubber (we are a licensee)
- Fairtrade production facility (our supplier holds this certificate - copies can be provided)
- GOTS certified organic cotton (our supplier holds this certificate - copies can be provided)
- GOTS & OEKO-TEX certified dyes (our supplier holds this certificate - copies can be provided)
- FSC certified natural rubber (our supplier holds this certificate - copies can be provided)
- FSC certified recycled paper packaging (our supplier holds this certificate - copies can be provided)
The short answer is: by industrial composting standards, no, our products are not compostable. This is because industrial composting (i.e. city composting) requires products to fully compost in 3 months to qualify as compostable. Our Hair Ties and Scrunchies are made of just 2 materials: organic cotton and natural tree rubber. Organic cotton makes up 70+% of the product, while natural rubber makes up the rest. While both are biodegradable materials, their time to decomposition is pretty different.
In a composting environment, the organic cotton portion should fully biodegrade in well under a year, depending on conditions. We are 6 months in on a trial in our home garden and all organic cotton for us has fully composted (no cotton remains).
The natural rubber we use is harvested from sustainably harvested rubber trees and then brought to a very high heat in which it undergoes a molecular transformation which allows the rubber to become stronger. For natural rubber to be used as a product in any commercial use, it must undergo this process. The tradeoff of making it stronger is that it takes longer to return to earth. From all the research we've read, our rubber will take anywhere from 3 to 10 years to fully biodegrade. While this is a lot longer than the organic cotton, it's still much better than the hundreds (or thousands) of years synthetic rubber will take to break down.
All that to say, composting our products depends on how you're using the compost and how long you have to wait. We have a lot of customers that cut their elastics into very small pieces, thus increasing the surface area of the rubber to speed the breakdown, and then burying them in their home gardens. If this isn't an option for you then at this stage they likely have to go in with regular waste. Before that though, we always recommend trying to repurpose them as household elastics, ties for plant stakes, elastics for electronic cords and more.
We have received some wonderful grants from the government of Canada (we're a Canadian business) that we're putting towards R&D to develop a fully compostable solution. That's absolutely our aim as an organization though we're proud to make the greenest, most ethical hair accessories in the world in the meantime.
Our Twist Headbands are made from 95% organic cotton and 5% spandex. Due to the spandex portion, the Twist Headbands are neither compostable nor biodegradable. No biodegradable alternative to spandex exists yet but when it does, we’ll be first in line.
Every single hair tie you’ve ever owned still exists. Yes, even the ones you owned as a child. That’s because they’re made of polyester, nylon or other code words for “plastic.” Those hair ties remain today in our lands and oceans, taking 500+ years to break down. We estimate 15 million synthetic hair ties are lost or tossed every single day in the USA alone.
In 2012 we launched KOOSHOO and introduced the first commercially made plastic-free hair elastics in the world. A simple swap you could truly feel good about.
Made from just two plant-based materials - organic cotton and natural tree rubber - KOOSHOO Hair Ties instantly provided customers globally with a plastic-free option for one of the most ubiquitous plastic products in the world.
