The look

Hair brushed back off the face and gathered into a small, neat bun set high at the back of the head. The front is smooth and flat to the scalp, with nothing left loose at the temples. Black sunglasses pushed up onto the crown, worn indoors as a headband.

The KOOSHOO Ruffle Scrunchie in Tuxedo wraps the base of the bun, with the frill ringing the knot rather than lying flat against it. On one side it sits flush to the bun, on the other it fans outward, which is what gives the style its volume. The off-white frill stitch runs along the edge of the ruffle and catches the light against the black organic cotton satin, which is what makes the floral shape so striking from a distance.

The rest of the outfit is deliberately quiet: a pale blue oversized button-down with the sleeves rolled to the elbow, a black midi skirt, black flats and a black top-handle bag. To recreate it:

1. Start with smooth, brushed-back hair. A little cream or gel at the hairline keeps the front flat.
2. Gather into a high ponytail at the back of the head, above the occipital bone rather than at the nape.
3. Twist into a compact bun and pin.
4. Wrap the Ruffle Scrunchie around the base once or twice depending on hair thickness, letting the frill sit against the bun on one side and fan outward on the other.

Why the ruffle is better for hair health than an elastic

A thin elastic concentrates tension into one narrow band, which is why breakage tends to appear at the same point on the hair shaft over time. A wide fabric channel spreads that tension across the whole ponytail.

The organic cotton satin surface also matters. Smooth fabric glides along the hair rather than catching on it, which keeps the cuticle flat. The frill adds volume around the base of a bun, which is what keeps a small, tightly pulled style from looking flat over several hours.

Elle Fanning's year so far

Fanning is nominated for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, airing Monday, September 14. The nomination is for her performance as Margo Millet in the Apple TV series Margo's Got Money Troubles, created by David E. Kelley and adapted from Rufi Thorpe's novel, alongside Michelle Pfeiffer, Nick Offerman and Nicole Kidman. The series received eight Emmy nominations for its first season and has been renewed for a second. Fanning is an executive producer through Lewellen Pictures, which she runs with her sister Dakota Fanning. It is also, for what it's worth, our personal favourite show of the year.

Earlier in 2026 she received her first Academy Award nomination, for Best Supporting Actress in Sentimental Value.
