Gyan, the Mudra of Knowledge - 30 Weeks of Mudras
While in Bali earlier this year the KOOSHOO team, inspired by their surroundings, did a series of Instagram tutorials for 30 different mudras. Once a week over the next 30 weeks we will be featuring a new mudra to add to your tool kit for well-being.
Inspired by the traditional craftsmanship of the Balinese people, we shot each mudra in front of a beautiful handcrafted Balinese door. We hope it helps transport you there.
This week’s mudra is the GYAN (or GIAN) MUDRA. Click here to see the previous mudras.
Description and Meaning
The Gyan Mudra is considered one of the most important mudras. It has been practiced in meditation for thousands of years, and continues to bring peace, calm and spiritual progress.
Known as the “mudra of knowledge”, it evokes the most expansive version of the self, so you can flow through your life lessons with ease and calm. It stimulates wisdom and knowledge.
The Gyan Mudra is good to do when speaking to someone so you come from your highest self.
How to do the Gyan Mudra
Lightly touch the tip of the thumb with the tip of the index finger, keeping the other fingers straight but relaxed. Do this with both the right and left hand and hold for at least a few minutes. In Kundalini Yoga the Gyan mudra is most often practiced with the hands resting on the knees and the elbows straight, although there are many variations.
Benefits
The Gyan Mudra stimulates the root chakra, easing tension and depression. It relates to expansion and knowledge. It is extremely calming and brings the practitioner spiritual openness and ease in meditation. It is also known within traditional ayurveda to boost the air element, thus stimulating the brain, empowering the mind, nervous system and pituitary gland. It can help enhance concentration and prevent insomnia.
Why we Love the Gyan Mudra
We love the Gyan Mudra as it is simple and all-encompassing. In any given situation it connects you to the universal flow by simply joining the two fingers.
