Grey Goes Glamorous: Welcoming Silver to the KOOSHOO Family
You may have heard some buzz recently about a new hair tie pack joining the KOOSHOO family, but in case you missed it, we welcomed Silver to join up with its rainbow, blonde, brown, black, classic and festive (also recently launched!) siblings. Silver celebrates those who are already grey, those who are growing out to grey, or those who are dyeing to shades of grey.
At KOOSHOO, we celebrate individuality: it’s what makes our hair accessories unique, and what attracts the most incredible humans to our community. We’re all different shapes, sizes, tones, ages...and we think there should be a hair tie for everybody. Now, there is.
How did we get here? A Grey Guide.
Historically, and unsurprisingly, humans have been all over the map when it comes to silver and grey; it turns out, we didn’t always shame the grey away! There was a time when grey was all the rage (see 18th century powdered wigs if you doubt us). If it weren’t for poor hygiene habits, those wigs may have caught on (but we’re pretty happy that trend didn’t stick). For a large majority of our recent past, however, grey hair has been something to hide, cover-up. It surprised us to learn that hair dye was not a recent invention and has been found in cultures as far back as 1500 BC.
There have also been some strange double-standard actions happening over the years when it comes to our hair. Men have - by and large- received “distinguished” accolades for “silver fox” looks and “salt and pepper” beards while women’s silver strands have not been worthy of the same press. This is truly regrettable as silver and grey tones are beautiful, authentic, and real - on any head.
The Silver Tides Are Turning
More and more, silver and grey is something to be celebrated: either au natural or with some salon-style help. This change has been happening gradually over the last several years, with celebrities and regular, everyday people alike choosing to let the silver shine. While it’s certainly not the case everywhere, we’re slowly starting to see a shift beyond ageism (stereotyping or discriminating based on age) and toward a place of acceptance: embracing people for who they are, where they are, and when they are.
The global pandemic also brought with it some silver linings (for better or worse). As the world shuttered in 2020, so too did salons and barbers across the world. Whether we liked it or not, we had to embrace our hair, whatever the colour or style. And it seems like many people really leaned into this, letting their colour fade, or embracing their changing tones.
Grey Is Glamorous
However we ended up at this place of silver and grey being “on-trend,” we’re here for it. The trend speaks to something larger at play: that we’re becoming comfortable in our own hair. That we're ready to hold our heads high about it.
